About

Nan, at Hadrian’s Wall, in Northumberland, England.
20 May 2019.

My home in New England.

October 2019. Home from my travels.

Lest you think that my travels are all to UNESCO World Heritage Sites, posh gardens, and 5 star hotels, be assured that I take equal pleasure in grocery-shopping while I’m abroad. Here, I’m riding the Travelator, on my way to buy groceries at the ASDA store, in Ashington, Northumberland, England.

10 May 2019. At La Biennale, Venice. During Press Days: in the Italian Pavilion.

Nan is a writer, photographer and itchy-footed traveler. She trained as an architect, and worked for many years as a book publisher. These days, she wanders through England and Italy, and across America, in search of stories about architecture, art, landscapes and history. At home in New Hampshire, Nan also designs houses, interiors and gardens, along with heirloom-quality garden furniture, which she’s exhibited at London’s Chelsea Flower Show.

Nan, in Norwich, Norfolk, England. YEP–this is how I look when I’m out and about, on a cold, drizzly English day: part Auntie-Mame-in-her-cat-eye-sunglasses/part 5-year-old-in-her-yellow-raincoat/with a bit of Queen-E-in-her-scarf thrown in/finished off with tough-boots-for-street-cred. Clearly, I dress for comfort, but I suppose that, with old age, comes license to look any way I want…..

I’m admiring the Fake Sheep at the Rococo Garden, in Painswick, Gloucestershire, England.

Atop Box Hill, in Surrey….doing my Jane Austen research.

28 May 2019. Whitby, North Yorkshire. On that cold rainy day I felt like I was wearing nearly all of the clothing I’d packed to see me through a 45 day long trip!

After each Journey, this is where the writing gets done.
